Testimonials From WWJB Converts! ![]() Read testimony from the fevered masses undergoing CONVERSION TO BUYLESSNESS after their WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY? experiences. Just saw WWJB and think you are doing great work. Though I agree with your mission I find it hard to put into practice due to social pressure. For example, last Christmas I told my family I didn't want to exchange gifts, and they all got me gifts anyways, which made me feel like a loser at present-opening time since I had come empty-handed. Anne, Columbia, South Carolina Dear Anne, You mean the gift-tradition is so automatic that none of your relatives slipped in a little hint? Amazing. But we have some encouragement for you, as you read some of these letters - people really are re-discovering gift-giving. People are saying: A gift has meaning not only because of what you give, but also how the creation of the gift impacted the world... Amen? --Rev To the Church of Stop Shopping: I have shopped at Wal Mart for low prices but now see the error of my ways....Hallelujah!!!! I want to be a disciple. Randall, Pensacola, Florida Dear Randall: We often close our shows with the song BACK AWAY, and it says, "When the lowest prices hit... Wal-Mart will it always reach me?" I wish you the power you need to resist! -- Rev Dear rev May the soils upon which I walk spring sustaining fruits. May I ask what percentage of return on an investment is gluttonous. May the tools I use be primarily of the heart, mind, and hand. May I not just walk the talk but may I dance it. Tim, Walpole, New Hampshire Dear Tim Change-a-lujah! We Americans don't make that connection easily - between our heart and mind and dancing and gluttony - and the vulnerable people beyond the horizon. We're teaching ourselves something that the Demon Monoculture erases with its marketing, for its profits... -- Rev Dear Reverend and Choir, I have sinned two-fold against thy teachings. Not only had I unsubscribed from your newsletter for some time, I also watched a pirated version of your movie. I intend to make up for my sins by attending your shows, again and soon. Perhaps, a documentary movie tip will quench the immediate flames I feel a-licking: the 4-part BBC doc "The Century of the Self" is a wealth of information aimed at explaining how America became a society of shopaholics. And Reverend - If you have any intention of creating sub-titles in German for the movie, I'd be interested to work with you on a translation of the script. Forgive a sinner -- Henning, Kingston, New York Henning, your struggle with your sins is very articulate, one might even say - practiced! And very German. Can we take you up on your offer? The Germans invite us to their cities and arts festivals often, six times so far - Augsburg, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Boechum, and Berlin twice. But we always feel like they stopped their shopping long ago. They are the best recyclers and dumpster-divers in the world. The think I am an Elvis impersonator, since they've kept the Jimmy Swaggarts from their shores. - Rev Just saw your movie and it was great. I've already asked family and friends to make donations to the charities of their choice as a gift to my wife and I. I will do the same for all gifts this year. -Matt, Canada Matt - so will we. Amen. Then the political world-saver in me immediately wonders, "How many people would do this?" This is simple, but it is radical, and for habitual consumers it is counter-intuitive. Giving gifts you don't pay a corporation for? This is emotionally risky. But the earth require this of us now. We can't argue with what has happened - now we must change. -Rev Rev and Savitri: I just watched the movie. I've waged my own personal attack on Pseudoamerica recently. I can't tell you how disgusted and helpless I feel at times watching people sponsor child labor and concentration camp style work environments abroad. You have my full support. Patrick, Boise, Idaho We need to remember that well-meaning people believe in this economy. There is a popular theory of nation-state evolution that says "Poor countries need to sacrifice a generation to sweatshops." David Brooks in the NY Times believes this. This is pure chauvinism - imperial thinking - and assumes that people in other countries didn't have any economy before we showed up. - Rev |
