People say "I'll be dead anyway" to my face. We pretend our grandchildren will wear flotation devices and burn suits to pre-K? The migration of millions from the coasts we treat like a TV show in re-runs. We have adopted the purposed forgetting of the Hiroshima and Holocaust survivors, but now we do it in advance.

We sense that forgetting is a part of Consumerism. Yes, forgetting is key to product convenience. But is death another Big Sale? Is that why we are comforted by convenience when we say, "I'll be dead by then?" Then, do the dead forget? We don't know that. When we fall back into time, do we stop being responsible? I believe that we still love the Earth, even as we disperse into it.

Can we re-invent what it is to be a radical American? Our ancestor activists did it again and again. We face such a formidable trance-state. We have to do extraordinary things to break this sleep.

I read this prophecy from the Hopi elders, made public in 2010.

Do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be a good time!
There is a river flowing very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold onto the shore.
They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore,
and push off and into the river,
Keep our eyes open, and our heads above water.
See who is in there with you and Celebrate.
