Molly Chanoff ! Singer of the Month

Molly is an acrobat and an alto

Molly is an acrobat and an alto, Ruby Spiegel named her singer of the month on February 1st, 2009. Way to go Molly! Its good timing too because she is performing all month with LAVA. These are her words:

It was January of 2006. Sarah called me up and said “I have an audition with Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir – you have to come with me!” We had been training our voices and singing in different capacities with Lava for a couple years at that point, but neither of us had ever auditioned for any voice type thing. We went to Staten Island to see the show, in this sweet little bookstore. I remember thinking that Ben DT looked familiar and noticing his multi-colored parachute pants; there were also many shout-outs to Adetola, who had just recently joined the choir; and, of course, I remember Derrick. Who wouldn’t remember him? After that Sarah and I sang Amazing Grace for James Benn in the back of the bookstore while people milled around. I had never been so nervous in my life; and I certainly didn’t have a clue as to what kind of community I was about to enter into.

The community of the choir makes me think of the school I went to growing up. It was an alternative school that my parents started in the 60s. Think Montessouri, think Waldorf, keep going along, fall off a cliff and you will land at the Sudbury Valley School. It was this gradeless, student-driven, democratic place that formed me; and all the people there, no matter if they were my best friend from age 4, or if they were just a face I saw every day, they were family.

And that’s like you! I see you every Sunday, sometimes more sometimes less, and maybe I have no idea how old you are or what you do with your days, but I do know the timbre of Chantel’s voice when she sings “and I don’t know what it is…”, and I know that Donald’s low notes resonate deep in my gut, and I know that when we modulate in our new Fabulous Bad Weather song I’m sure we’re all going to start levitating. You are like my singing-listening-breathing family. Singing with people feels spiritual to me, and what better way to satisfy and warm my soul than to sing with all you beautiful, unpredictable, inspirational people. I thank my lucky stars for this, and I am deeply honored to receive the singer of the month award! PS – come see the Lava show and see what I do with my days

Molly, Molly, Molly !

Siren of the high wire!    She jumps, leaps, soars through the air.  tumbling, head stands,  HELPED ME STAND ON MY HEAD!!!

Molly Rocks and it is a joy to have her in the Life After Shopping Choir!

love and peace,
Barbara

Molly, Marlon Brando, and Much More

The first time I heard Molly sing she was upside down and swinging from a trapeze.  Perfect harmony.  Thirds, fifths and sixths above and below Sarah, performing an anti-war hymn about coming home.   The first time I photographed Molly, she was standing on her hands outside Marlon Brando’s door at the Carnegie Hall Apartments.  Then, there was the time I saw Molly walk an entire city block on her hands – a handstand-a-thon in Brooklyn.   Molly is a brave woman with vast skills and talents.  She’s a singer, dancer, tumbler and artist who loves what she does and shares with many her gifts and insights.  She has inspired many in the choir to stand on their hands, to persevere, to listen and to contribute.  Molly and I once worked on a soft shoe dance for the choir’s “Come Happy.”  We studied (stole) steps from old Laurel and Hardy films we downloaded off YouTube; then rehearsed them inside the Chelsea Market.  Depending on which side of the market we rehearsed, she could be Stan Laurel one time, then Oliver Hardy the next.

As soon as I finish writing this, I am going to soft shoe in her honor, then stand on my hands while I sing a few bars of something sweet and funny.  I love you, Molly!

Gravity defying

Molly! If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes! Molly can fly. Yes, it's true. I've seen her. She floats, then leaps, then runs, and then, she flies.

Molly after days of Your Talent not to say Compassion....

From the Lava performance to the singing and preaching at the fronts of prisons these last few days I felt your powerful soul.  Well, you always have a humorous angle on the world, and I suppose a gymnast would have humor, somehow that fits. You spin and grab and somersault and land and keep running and tumbling and I suppose the humorous view of the world can come from that motion.  Then too you were singing through your tears as the detention center survivors Ravi and Abdulai told their graphic reports of - somehow - the cruelty from our own city and country.

I know that when you give us the sensation of weightlessness on that trapeze of yours - that flight has all that trust in it.  You teach us the leap of faith, and where-ever it goes it starts with your smile and thanks for that.

Good golly Miss Molly!

One of the most stunning shows EVER was at the Highline ballroom where we got to witness first-hand your acrobatic mastery.  Graceful, amazing, breath-taking, mesmerizing!  Even tho you sit way way over yonder in the alto section, it is a joy to watch you often stretching or doing handstands.

You rock Molly!  Congrats on being singer of the month!

Congrats Molly!

You're a fierce performer on the stage and in the air! We are so happy you're in our community :)

thank you

Thank you Molly for getting so into our new song.  Watching you and Chantel spasm next to each other during the chorus " What will you do!" just get's me!  You are such a focused person and I admire your attention to detail and your ability to be in the moment.  I'll never forget the pink spandex flying around the Highline.

Love, Laura
