Sundance to air new Spurlock docu-comedy

By The Herald-Dispatch
On Monday, The Sundance Channel will premiere Beckley native Morgan Spurlock's new film, "What Would Jesus Buy?" a docu-comedy about the commercialization of Christmas.

The film makes its U.S. television debut on Sundance Channel at 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14.

The film is directed by Rob VanAlkemade and produced by Spurlock, the award-winning writer and director perhaps best known for "Super Size Me."

"What Would Jesus Buy?" follows the adventures of Reverend Billy and congregation of the Church of Stop Shopping. Sporting a bleached blonde pompadour, clerical collar and white caterer's jacket, the Reverend -- a.k.a actor/activist Billy Talen -- delivers serio-comic sermons and original gospel-styled songs intended to raise questions about materialism, debt and consumption.

Piling into two bio-diesel-powered buses, Billy, the 35-member choir and the 7-piece band take off on a month-long, cross-country tour of America at the height of the Christmas shopping season.

Their itinerary includes college campuses, shopping malls, suburban streets and Wal-Mart corporate headquarters, as well as their final Christmas destination: Disneyland.
