Life Outside the Bathtub
There is a sad wet snow falling today. We went to the park and the only other creatures we saw were down covered ducks and geese and a couple of swans floating in between the ice floes. The trees were silent, the pathways hardly traced by footprints.
Some good news today, GM announced that they were discontinuing the manufacture of the HUMMER. The Yankee Nuclear Power Plant is being denied a renewal by the great state of Vermont. Obama sounds rational at the Health Care Summit in DC. Olympic coverage today includes an in depth article about the debt it leaves behind for British Columbia. There are sparkles of reason all around us.
Billy is reading about Blue Whales and population decimation in the Capitalism, Nature, Socialism I am thinking about the "Killer" Whale that killed its trainer at sea world yesterday and has since been discussed in the news cycle ad nauseum, as if it is somehow surprising that a 12,000 pound animal would be happy and well behaved living in a swimming pool the size of a basketball court. How can anyone go watch a jailed whale do flips for entertainment. And those trainers, I mean they must really love those animals, what keeps them from setting them free at night?

I agree with your confusion regarding the trainers...I'm sure I would be fired or worse if i worked in that environment. These people are self interested...they must be. They want to be close to the whales, and that's it. Many will tell you about how they desire to educate people, etc., and while I'm sure they do, they fail to realise that the lesson they are teaching is that it is OK to use these creatures for amusement. Training these things to spin basketballs and such enrages me; it's just another example of how selfish and arrogant people can be.
Anyway, I'm sure this trainer knew she was playing with fire by toying with such a titan, and although I feel bad for her and her family I wouldnt label this an 'accident' so much as I would call it taking a calculated risk and paying the price for doing so.
Good news about the Hummer.
