HOWARD ZINN: "Holy Wars"

HOWARD ZINN: "Holy Wars"
When Howard Z was a kid, living around here in Brooklyn, something in his gazing across the mead in Prospect Park, something about a book he found in his parent's attic, some star in the cloud of stars that hung over the streets - gave him this life that was such a gift to us. He made completely brave and original ch...oices from very early on. He happily took the total risk. He dueted with the world so that he could pry underneath and behind the versions of historical events sanctified by traditional power. The "Peoples' History" books give us that freedom that he had, and now we'll always have it.

I'd like to post the most recent of his lectures that came into my life. "Holy Wars" asks a question that few of us would think to ask. Why do some American wars become good wars, beyond criticism, sentimentally and even religiously beloved. And what does that do to us? How are bad wars - a constant thing in our country lately - protected by the good ones?

RIP HZ

One of this country's finest public intellectuals is gone: RIP Howard Zinn. I first read him when I was only 15, still in high school and beginning to question everything I had been taught about U.S. history. To say that his life and work inspired countless of people would be an understatement - he truly did not waste his time here on earth.

The loss of a vital voice

Howard Zinn is one of the few voices in this country who forces the American people to look at who they really are and what they've really done over the course of their history. He always spoke the truth about this country, whether people were willing to listen or not. He was a true, and great, patriot.

Declarations of Independence

I heard members of the Catonsville 9 speak about their action and subsequent trial. And they said it was when Howard Zinn took the stand as an expert witness on civil disobedience and explained to the jury what civil disobedience was in terms that were so compelling and easy to understand that the defendants started to feel that they would be exonerated. Howard Zinn is such a beautiful example of how important it is to educate ourselves, how it can have real world implications and his writings are invaluable. A Peoples History of the United States is great but I suggest Declarations of Independence.

ah, yes

standing ovation, thank you Reverend, thank you Zinn

Re: Brother Zinn " Makes It Plain"

WOW!
I've read most of  Zinn books and 'A Peoples History of The United States'
stands RIGHT NEXT to 'The Shaping of Black America' as My 2 favorite
books on Our Cllective Hist (or should I say "Holstory"), but except for
pieces of lectures heard during WBAI fund Drives, I'd never had the pleasure
of hearing a Complete Phd. Zinn lecture. I'm reminded of Malcolm X, Phd. John HendrickClark and Phd. Ivan VanSetima. (Aquarius January 26th - w/Paul Newman & Angela Davis) I NOW see him as one of the 3 sides of
The Holy Trinity of American History,With VanSertima and Malcolm X.
being the other 2!

R.I.P. Howard,You will be Much Missed.

Peace,

Wyl
